Industrial Design, Israeli Designers naama agassi | artificial times

i first met a naama agassi creation, when i stumbled upon her (artificial) “sun dial” back in 2019, while visiting the fresh pain art fair in tel aviv. surely, i was mesmerized by its concept. it’s a clock that mimics ancient time-telling mechanisms and displaying the time by casting a shadow on the clock’s surface. since then, i’ve been checking on her from time to time. naama’s artificial collection has been in the works for a few years now but with each year, she comes up with different and heart warming colors. so for her 2021 artificial collection, she is all about terracotta and blush, dark blues and clouds and greens and greens.
as for the making of the “artificial” collection, naama developed a unique technique, following a traditional method, that imitates the look of natural marble. in the process, she preserved the characteristics of the age-old craft, but utilized the freedom it allowed to produce functional objects from impossible stones that could not exist in nature.
naama says that the technique she developed forces her to work with her hands, in a way that requires her to pay attention, be accurate and make a lot of effort over a long time. it’s a manual labor, which she finds meditative, especially during these crazy times that we live in.
and so, the artificial collection is a series of lighting fixtures and shelves that take you back in time and make you fall in love all over again with nostalgic memories of everything made out of marble.
