Graphic Design, Israeli Designers A Typographer in The Making: Take Two

As I mentioned earlier today, Liron Lavi Turkenich will be joining me here on DesignBreak every other Tuesday and share with us her typographic journey and more. It’s been a long time dream of mine to get a back stage peek to a Master degree student’s life and Liron was super nice to let me (and you) tag along. I’m sure it’s going to be quite a ride and I can’t wait to find out more about this super sweet and mega talented designer.
FYI, Liron just opened her very own blog in which she is documenting her adventures and you should check it out for yourself. It’s a real treat!
Liron, take it from here!
Trying to cut letters in stone and hoping that the reason that I’m not very good at it is because I’m left handed. Figuring out my own method of washing hands with two separate British taps. Deciding on designing Amharic as well as Hebrew and Latin, and not saying anymore “English letters” but “Latin letters”. Walking around London every weekend. Finding normal coffee, drinking normal coffee, drinking lots of tea, not understanding the whole “milk with tea” idea. Doing an Arabic type workshop, Indian type workshop and learning about chocolate letters in the Netherlands. Standing in a room full of rain in the Barbican and smiling to myself. Knowing that there are many good ice cream spots in London but always finding myself in the same one. Knowing that there are many good things to eat in Shoreditch but always finding myself eating the same Ethiopian Injera. Being sad for not having a supermarket in a walking distance and discovering the time saved by ordering groceries online. Needing sunlight. Needing better gloves. Starting to sketch letters, trying to figure out the Glyphs application. Going around in circles, taking out typeface specimens from the 19th century, amazing reading materials, rare magazines and being in awe of all the amazing things around me. Department Reading room, University library, special collections in Merl. Touching really old typography, paper, letters in Michael Twyman‘s class. I still can’t believe I’m here. I’m in a minus 3 degrees heaven.
